Curator, gallerist and writer James Payne is on a mission to demystify the art world and discover the stories behind it’s greatest paintings and sculptures. Exceptionally knowledgeable and equally as passionate, James makes art accessible to his ever-curious audience. Great Art Explained has amassed over 1.3 million subscribers with over 42 million collective views since it’s inception in 2020.
James’s professional accomplishments include co-owning and acting as head curator of PayneShurvell gallery, originally based in Shoreditch, London.
He is a regular contributor to Artlyst.com, Garageland Magazine, and Mü Magazine, as well as being one of the main contributors to Amazing Art Adventures: Around the world in 400 immersive experiences published by Frances Lincoln Publishers Ltd.
James has given several lectures for Google Arts and Culture which are available online; video from his YouTube channel Great Art Explained have also been shown at several museums and galleries, including The Albertina Museum, Vienna.
The Great Art Explained book comes out worldwide on Thames & Hudson in Autumn 2024.
